Seven Skincare Skins – Sin 2 – Not Wearing an SPF

Why wearing a daily SPF is important

Daily use of a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) cream is vital to stave off the most harmful effects of the sun – those pesky UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin, and can lead to skin cancer as well as premature ageing in the form of wrinkles and fine lines. UVB rays are responsible for the burn or tan people yearn for, but are no less dangerous as they harm the upper layers of the dermis. Over exposure to the sun can damage the skin’s DNA and disrupt cell repair – making it harder for collagen and elastin to form. Remember, a tan equates to a scar.

How to read the Signs

This is how sun damaged skin will look and feel:

• Prematurely aged
• Uneven skin tone
• Early onset of fine lines

Sunscreen facts

There are two types of sunscreen: the traditional chemical-based cream, which absorbs UV rays, releasing energy as heat, and a more sophisticated physical cream, which will reflect energy rays, and which tends to be less irritating on the skin. Dermalogica uses UV Smart Booster Technology in many of its products to enhance photoprotection and reflect.

Any sunscreen claiming to be higher than factor 30 will be full of chemicals, which could make your skin become sensitive. There isn’t much point in using it.

SPFs can be found in some moisturisers. You can also get it as a booster to add to your moisturisers, foundations, tinted moisturisers and powders.

SPF is calculated by scientists using the equation: Burn time without SPF x SPF number = maximum sun exposure time in minutes. However, this time can differ depending on where you are in the world, how high an altitude you’re at or if you’re swimming or skiing (water and snow magnify the sun’s rays).

Saintly Solution – your guide to being safe in the sun

Wear SPF all year round – use factor 15 during the winter months and a sun block factor 30 during the summer. The sooner you start wearing an SPF the better, and the longer your skin will be protected.

According to Skin Cancer UK, SPFs work best if a person applies 2mg of sunscreen for every square centimetre of skin exposed. This equates to about 35ml (two tablespoonfuls) if wearing a swimsuit, or about two teaspoons for the arms, face and hands.

If the sun is strong, don’t stay out in it and fry your skin. Be sensible, and wear a hat or take to the shade.
