Seven Skincare Skins – How many are you guilty of? Sin 3 – Not looking after your eyes

Why taking care of your eyes is important

The skin around the eye is thinner and therefore more prone to wrinkles, puffiness and dark circles than other skin. Consequently, it will be one of the first places to show signs of tiredness and ageing. Fine lines will become wrinkles if not kept hydrated.

How to read the Signs

The signs of neglected skin around the eyes are:

• Puffiness around the eye
• Crows feet at the corners
• Dark circles beneath the eye
• Premature bags under the eye
• Crepey skin around the eye
• Drooping eyelids

Make your eyes right
Each day, we blink, laugh, cry and frown – processes which involve the continual movement of our eyes and the fragile skin around them. Add to this the environmental assault from sun, wind and rain and you can begin to see how lines, puffiness and dark circles develop. Rubbing our eyes also contributes to the problem. The skin surrounding them lacks moisture and loses elasticity as collagen production slows. However, premature deterioration of the eye area can be slowed by the use of complex eye treatments and by making changes to our day-to-day habits. Opt for products which contain natural firming agents and promote critical hydration, such as phytonutrients, antioxidant vitamins and botanicals.

Saintly Solutions – your guide to perfect peepers
• Every day, apply a good eye cream packed with antioxidants and vitamins to help keep the skin supple and to reduce puffiness. Products containing Vitamin C and Wild Yam will repair premature ageing and smooth fine lines.
• Help to prevent drooping of the eyelids with a monthly maintenance eye firming treatment. Visit a professional skin care therapist, who will be able to do this using a mild microcurrent.
• Use oil-free and non-alcohol based eye make-up removers to prevent dryness and irritation.
• Protect the delicate area with a chemical-free sunscreen (SPF15).
• If you smoke give up, and avoid drinking alcohol to excess.
• Revisit your diet. Are you getting enough nutrients from fresh fruit and vegetables, or drinking enough water?
