E is for Exfoliant – which Dermalogica product suits you best?

LAST week’s blog concerned the whys and wherefores of exfoliation – and the fact everyone needs a little helping hand when it comes to getting clear and bright skin.

When our skin ages, the natural process of shedding and renewing cells slows down – resulting in a tell-tale dull appearance. Exfoliation helps the skin to perform its vital shedding function. Physical exfoliants use friction from grains, such as rice or bran, to shift debris, while chemical exfoliants break down and dissolve the glue that leaves the dead skin cells clinging on too long.

Dermalogica has a range of differing exfoliants to suit different skin types. A skin care specialist can advise you on which one is best for you, and if you have visited a Dermalogica stockist, you should refer to your Face Map and recommended product list for guidance.

In the mean time, here is a flavour of each of the products available from Time of Life, and their properties.

Dermalogica Gentle Cream Exfoliant
Your skin will be soothed as well as exfoliated with this product, as it contains calm-inducing Lavender, Aloe Vera and Coneflower extracts.

Gentle Cream Exfoliant is a non-abrasive product containing all important hydroxy, lactic and salicylic acids, natural fruit enzymes, and a special exfoliating complex to shift dulling surface debris from your skin. It also helps to stimulate cell renewal.

To be used twice weekly, a thin layer of the Gentle Cream Exfoliant is applied over cleansed skin and left for 10 to 15 minutes, before being rinsed.

Not suitable for: Those with environmentally-sensitised skin or with medically prescribed exfoliators

Dermalogica Skin Prep Scrub

Dermalogica Skin Prep Scrub positively encourages a smooth complexion. It is a physical exfoliant using a finely ground natural Corn Cob Meal to slough away cells that clog the skin, and polishes it along the way.

Plant extracts – of Mallow, Ivy and Aloe Vera – add an element of calm to the proceedings, and combat against over scrubbing.

Skin Prep Scrub is designed to be used three times per week. Simply cleanse skin with your prescribed Dermalogica cleanser, then massage the exfoliant on to the face. Rinse thoroughly using a sponge and warm water.

Not suitable for: Those using medically prescribed exfoliators

Daily Microfoliant

This product microfoliates skin for instantly noticeable results, and uses a clever rice-based enzyme powder.

The Daily Microfoliant is a powder-to-emulsion formula, which lathers up on contact with water. It contains brightening ingredients to even out the skin’s pigmentation, derived from plant extracts including Licorice and Grapefruit.

What’s more, Daily Microfoliant is gentle enough to use every day, meaning that instantly improved appearance of your skin will have a continued effect.

After cleansing, lather up about a teaspoon’s worth of powder, and rub the face gently in circular motions. Continue for one minute, before rinsing.

Not suitable for: Those using medically prescribed exfoliators

AGE Smart Multivitamin Thermafoliant

Skin polishers don’t come more sophisticated than this – the Dermalogica Multivitamin Thermofoliant combines physical and chemical exfoliation for the benefit of mature skin, and radiates a warmth into the face on contact.

Its aim is to refine the skin’s texture and enable the age-fighting ingredients to be absorbed. Lactic and Salicylic acids work to smooth the skin, while the mineral powder formula polishes to lessen fine lines.

A versatile product, the Thermafoliant is packed with Vitamins A, C and E, and can be used on the skin whether it is wet or dry.
